Mark Powel

Mark began training in karate in 1984 at the age of 16 ,with Sensei Ronnie Christopher and gained his 1st Dan black belt in 1988 under the late master Enoeda.

During the period of 1987 to the year 2000, Mark was a member of Ruach Karate Clubs and trained at Cocks Moors Woods and competing in several national and regional championships. He began competing as a 1st Kyu brown belt going on to win a number of competitions with the team, which included member’s Sensei Ronnie Christopher, Lloyd Price, Gregory Hegarty and David Hughes to name but a few.

Mark was also a member of the Central Region Squad trained by Sensei Frank Brennan and during this period he was awarded his 2nd Dan (Dec 1993) and 3rd Dan(Apr 1999) under the late Sensei Enoeda.

In June 2005 under the watchful eyes of Sensei Cyril Cummings and Sensei Ronnie Christopher he has now gained his 4th Dan.

Mark says “I have always been inspired by Sensei Ronnie Christopher in his teaching and training, the way he has time for the students from white belts to black belts; no one is afraid to approach him with their queries. I hope that I can be as half as good at teaching students as Sensei.”

MOTVATION- “I had failed my 1st Dan grading the first and second time too. I was feeling quite down and Sensei Ronnie Christopher took me to one side and said “You will get there”. With this thought in my head, I trained even harder and stronger with Sensei always watching and pushing me very hard, I was very determined and motivated to pass the third and final time around. My thought is “Never give up!” Train hard and regularly if you can get to the dojo little early do some training and practice and at home. As Sensei always said to me…”You will get there!”

The year 2005 has been a wonderful year for me. Getting married to Miss Sarah Willock (now Mrs Powell) was my greatest achievement but she also gained her Black Belt 1st Dan this year just before I gained my 4th Dan under our Sensei Ronnie Christopher.
